MEG LEVY

Bluewater Sales

Meg Levy started Bluewater Sales with a three-horse consignment at the 1999 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale. At the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale, her offerings were up to six.

“Really, it just grew from there,” said Levy, whose company ranked eighth in North American broodmare sales in 2009 with 70 mares sold for $4,368,300. “We got lucky in that our growth coincided with the last rise in the sale game, so we were able to grow with the market.”

Levy said purchasing a farm in Lexington in 2002 was one of the keys to Bluewater’s growth, particularly on the broodmare side. Bluewater sold Grade 1 winner Asi Siempre for owner Martin Schwartz for $3-million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale.

“Having some of those top mares such as Asi Siempre, Angara (GB), and Gorella (Fr) on our farm and then selling them has been great,” Levy said.

Levy attributed her farm’s success to hard work and luck.

“Certainly if we have the horse, like anybody else, we can sell it,” she said. “The sales game in particular is very open. You don’t have to be from Kentucky and as long as you’re detail oriented and hard working you can make it work.”
