MAGGI MOSS

Owner

In 2008, Thoroughbred owner Maggi Moss took a leave of absence from her successful law career to focus on her racing stable. She now wonders if her love of horses will turn that “leave” into a retirement.

Moss’ royal blue and lime green silks have become a U.S. racing fixture. In 2006, Moss led all owners in North America in wins with 211, becoming the first woman to accomplish that feat since 1945. Moss secured leading owner titles in meets at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Fair Grounds, as well as her seventh straight Prairie Meadows title that same season.

This year, Moss ranks third by wins with 95 and fifth in earnings with $1,704,755 through June 14.

At its 2007 annual awards dinner, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association named Moss national owner of the year.

Moss campaigned Grade 3 winner Indian Chant, whom she says is her favorite horse. She and some partners purchased Peace Rules for $35,000 at the 2002 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March sale of selected two-year-olds in training, campaigning him for three starts before selling the eventual three-time Grade 1 winner to Edmund Gann.

Moss would advise women interested in racing to work with top-notch individuals, learn as much as possible about the industry, and “understand that hard work is not gender-biased.”
