As she approaches age 80, Betty Moran’s love of Thoroughbred racing and breeding appears as strong as ever.
Moran, owner of Brushwood Stable in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has participated successfully at the highest levels of Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and sales for decades.
Brushwood’s best breeding accomplishments include Europe’s 2003 champion three-year-old filly Russian Rhythm and Grade 1 winners High Yield and Hard Spun. Brushwood also bred Group 3 Bernstein, a two-time leading sire in Argentina; and multiple graded stakes winner Master Command.
As owner, Moran’s Brushwood won the 1985 Belmont Stakes (G1) with Creme Fraiche, 2004 Arlington Million Stakes (G1) with Kicken Kris, ’00 Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree with Papillon, and ’06 Jersey Stakes (Eng-G3) at Royal Ascot with Jeremy.
More recently, Moran bought the Empire Maker mare Mushka for $2.4-million at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Mushka subsequently won the 2009 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course and finished second in that year’s Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1).
Moran currently has 33 mares, 12 yearlings, and 20 weanlings at her 260-acre farm. The broodmare band includes Grade 1 winners Catinca, Strategic Maneuver, and Cotton Blossom.
In 2002, Moran was honored with the Allaire duPont Humanitarian Award by the Thoroughbred Charities of America and the Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s Silver Bellwether Medal.
