Becky Thomas has been involved in breeding, buying, and selling Thoroughbreds for more than 20 years.
That diversification not only has helped make her the highly respected, well-rounded horsewoman she is today, but it has served her well in troubled economic times.
“Versatility is huge in this market,” said Thomas, who began buying yearlings and reselling them at the two-year-olds sales in the late 1980s. “Really it’s been the key to everything I’ve done. I’ve been blessed with the experience of lots of opportunities in this business. Combining the education of breeding, as well as pinhooking, training, and racing, has allowed me to view each horse in its entirety.”
The list of graded stakes winners Thomas’ Ocala-based Sequel Bloodstock has sold at the two-year-olds sales includes Officer, Habibti, Wild Escapade, Kafwain, House of Fortune, and Unification.
Thomas started breeding on a larger scale in the mid- to late 1990s in reaction to the rising price of yearlings at auction. Partnering with Lewis Lakin, Thomas co-bred 2006 champion older female Fleet Indian and Grade 1 winner Behaving Badly.
Thomas started Sequel Stallions in 2001 and co-owns with Dennis Narlinger Sequel Stallions New York, which stands leading New York sire Freud, who will shuttle to Argentina this year.
