Pedigree Highlights

C P West is tail-male to *Sickle via Mr. Prospector’s Gone West branch. His sire, Came Home, is tail-female to Reine-de-Course *Clonaslee via her Blessed Again branch. This female family has produced 1956-’57 champion sprinter Decathlon, 1961 Hollywood Gold Cup winner and paternal grandsire of John Henry Prince Blessed, 1983 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Deputed Testamony, 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie; 1967 Florida Derby winner and superior sire In Reality, and 1981 Italian Derby (Ity-G1) winner Glint of Gold.

C P West’s broodmare sire, Dynaformer, is the sire of Barbaro and is from the grand old Darby Dan family of Golden Trail. This family has produced many fine runners including Ryafan, Memories of Silver, Sunshine Forever, and 2001 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Monarchos.

C P West is tail-female to Reine-de-Course Beaming Beauty. This is one of Colonel Bradley’s great families, and it contains 1926 Kentucky Derby winner Bubbling Over, 1945 Santa Anita Derby winner Bymeabond, 1967 Horse of the Year Damascus, 1965 Florida Derby and Flamingo Stakes winner Native Charger; and 1998 champion three-year-old filly Banshee Breeze.

Pedigree Inbreeding

C P West is inbred to full siblings Round Table and Monarchy on a 6 x 5 pattern. He picks up another cross of this family via Gone West for a three-way cross of Aloe via Aroma/Feola x2. Came Home carries a cross of full siblings Two Lea and Miz Clementine, and there is also a cross of half siblings Tenerani and Tokamura in his dam. Finally, half siblings Sansonnet and Fair Trial appear 7 x 7.

Contender Status

Patience has been Nick Zito's watchword in bringing C P West to the Preakness Stakes (G1). By his own admission, Zito does not want to give the colt too many races, which explains why he will go into the Preakness with just two starts this year.

Last year, after winning a maiden race at Saratoga Race Course, the Came Home colt was a close second to King of the Roxy in the Futurity Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park. Zito then sent him to Churchill Downs where he finished sixth to Street Sense in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), but came out of that race with chips in his ankles.

C P West resurfaced on March 31 with a troubled trip that ended with a nose second in a Gulfstream Park allowance race, then most recently was a good second to Divine Park in Aqueduct's Withers Stakes (G3).

Zito allows that he's been frustrated "with all these seconds" (three in five career starts), but also recognizes that luck hasn't always been on his side.

It is worth noting that the Withers has certainly been a bellweather for Preakness performance the past two years. Last year's Withers winner, Bernardini, won the Preakness, while 2005 Withers winner Scrappy T ran second to Afleet Alex in the Preakness.

Recent Works

May 7 - Four furlongs breezing in :48.51 at Belmont Park.

May 14 - Four furlongs breezing in :47.24 at Belmont Park. Second fastest of 105 at the distance.

Future Plans

The Preakness Stakes (G1) is where Zito is currently "leaning" for C P West, assuming the colt works well in the interim. Pimlico will be the sixth track the colt has raced at, and would be Zito's 14th Preakness runner in 17 years.
