Contender Status
Denis of Cork was 20th and last for much of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) before launching a drive that found him third as Big Brown crossed the finish line.
While he finished 8 1/4 lengths behind Big Brown, his closing charge at 1 1/4 miles could make him a runner to contend with at the 1 1/2-mile distance of the Belmont Stakes (G1).
Denis of Cork had been jogging at Churchill Downs after the Kentucky Derby and while trainer David Carroll initially had to take it slow due to wet weather, the Harlan's Holiday colt now appears ready for his next assignment.
"He's a big, tall, narrow horse that doesn't take a lot of training, so I can get away with missing some training," Carroll said.
Denis of Cork's light schedule came to a planned end with a May 19 workout, the beginning of what Carroll termed as getting "more serious with him."
Denis of Cork is named for a priest from County Cork who is a friend of the owners, William and Suzanne Warren.
June 2 - Four furlongs breezing in :48.60 at Churchill Downs, track fast. 20th best of 46 workouts at the distance.
May 26 - Five furlongs breezing in :59.80 at Churchill Downs, track fast. Third best of 21 workouts at the distance.
"He went really well, I thought it was a great work for him," jockey Robby Albarado said after the May 26 workout. "It was a nice, long maintenance work. He went fast, too, and was within himself. I'm excited about him and it sets him up great for the Belmont."
May 19 - Five furlongs breezing in 1:01.00 at Churchill Downs, track fast. Fifth best of 31 workouts at the distance.
Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 7 at Belmont Park
Trainer David Carroll after watching Denis of Cork work at Churchill Downs on May 26:
"He's a very steady type of horse. He's not going to blow you away, but he is going to go about his business."
