Contender Status

Tres Borrachos, who is scheduled to arrive at Pimlico Race Course on the same flight as Big Brown, galloped 1 5/8 miles after the renovation break at Churchill Downs May 6 under exercise rider Andy Durnin.

Trainer Beau Greely owns the Ecton Park colt in partnership with John Greely IV and Phil Houchens.

Beau Greely trained Borrego, who ran seventh in the 2004 Preakness Stakes (G1) behind Smarty Jones.

Greely had considered adding blinkers to Tres Borraches for the Preakness, but quickly discarded the idea.

"It was just probably the fact that in Arkansas a horse had passed him and then he came back and dug in and beat that horse," Greely explained. "It was just a thought that went through my mind. We tried it one morning, and he actually went no different.

"After rethinking it, he's got enough speed to where I'd just hate to mess it up and put a little too much [speed] into him."

Recent Works

May 13 - Four furlongs breezing in :50.40 at Churchill Downs, track fast. 43rd best of 61 workouts at the distance.

May 7 - Five furlongs breezing in :59.60 at Churchill Downs, track fast. Second best of 30 workouts at the distance.

Future Plans

Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 17 at Pimlico Race Course

Quotable

Trainer Beau Greely, after Tres Borraches worked at Churchill Downs on May 7:

"It looked like he didn't get out of a gallop. He went beautiful. I will breeze him next Tuesday[May 13], probably an easy half, and then ship to Pimlico on Wednesday. I think the Preakness will probably suit this horse better than the Derby would have. The turns are a little tighter and it looks like he carries speed."
