Contender Status

Hey Byrn had modest stakes race success last year at Calder Race Course, finishing second in the Florida Stallion Affirmed Stakes and fourth in the Foolish Pleasure Stakes before being sidelined with a blood infection.

After being out of action for over four months the Put It Back colt has trounced allowance horses at Gulfstream Park in his two starts this year, winning on February 10 by 14 1/2-lengths and on March 2 by six lengths.

The latter performance, in which Hey Byrn closed into a slow pace and drew off, convinced his connections that the Florida Derby (G1), which also happens to be at Gulfstream, was not an unrealistic goal.

Hey Byrn's status for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) depended greatly on how he performed in the Florida Derby since the colt was not among the early nominees for the Triple Crown.

His fourth place finish in the Florida Derby, which added $50,000 to his bankroll, convinced his connections to pay the late nomination fee of $6,000 to be eligible to participate in the Triple Crown races.

Quotable

Trainer Edward Plesa Jr. after Hey Byrn won his first two allowance race starts in 2008 by a combined 20 1/2-lengths:

"I'm really pleased with the way this horse has come around this year. We had to stop on him last year with a little blood infection. It's very special to have a good one like this for Mrs. Oxenberg, who named him after her late husband [Bernie]."
