Contender Status

Teuflesberg doesn't lack for racing experience, the three-year-old colt made his 20th career start on August 25 in the King's Bishop Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Considering the powerful manner in which Hard Spun won the King's Bishop, Teuflesberg's fourth place finish after running near the back of the pack early was better than several other Breeders' Cup hopefuls that were in the field.

Trainer Jamie Sanders, who also owns part of Teuflesberg, has entered the winner of this year's Woody Stephens Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park and the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park in the Marfa Stakes on September 15 at Turfway Park.

Sanders hoped the Marfa would prove to be a useful prep for Turfway's Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3) on September 29.

But apparently disagreement among members of the ownership caused Teufesberg to be scratched from the Marfa despite Sander's desire to run.

Sanders was considering the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) on September 30 at Belmont Park but Teuflesberg developed some lung congestion and had to be withdrawn from that race.

The often revised plan for Teuflesberg now points towards Keeneland Race Course and either the Phoneix Breeders' Cup (G3) on October 6 or the Perryville Stakes (G3) on October 13.

If that plan comes to fruition, a decision would still need to be made by the partners concerning the Breeders' Cup, an appearance that seems to grow more distant with each passing day.
