Pedigree Highlights

Imawildandcrazyguy is a Phalaris-line colt from the Nearctic branch of Nearco via Icecapade. His sire, G1 winner Wild Event, is from the same family as the grand sire Theatrical, 1994 champion grass horse Paradise Creek, and 1964 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Prince Royal II. Unfortunately, Wild Event was exported to Brazil in 2006.

Imawildandcrazy guy is tail-female to the Royal Flush mare Applause (Family 12-b). His second dam, Din’s Darling, is a half sister to multiple stakes winner and G1 placed Din’s Dancer. His dam is the unraced Top Account mare Frosty Cupcake, a half sister to stakes placed David’s Ghost. Apart from these horses, the immediate family is on the sketchy side.

Pedigree Inbreeding

Imawildandcrazyguy is inbred to Ruffian’s dam Shenanigans via a 3 x 4 cross of half siblings Icecapade and Laughter. His dam carries three crosses of *La Troienne via Businesslike/Baby League x2 and has a double of Hoist the Flag and a treble of Tourbillon. *Khaled is doubled via Bushel-n-Peck in sire Wild Event and via Swaps in dam Frosty Cupcake, and there is a good mixture of full brothers Pharos and Fairway.

Contender Status

Imawildandcrazyguy is the kind of contender that kind of snuck up on everyone, as his Kentucky Derby (G1) odds of 28.90-to-1 will attest.

He finished fourth in the Derby after racing 20th and last for the first three-quarters of a mile, a remarkable run considering he was fanned ten-wide entering the stretch.

He certainly made a few Superfecta players happy as the longshot in the top four that triggered a Superfecta payoff of $29,046.40.

The nagging question about Imawildandcrazyguy is the fact that while he has performed well against some of his peers, was the Derby run a true indicator of his ability to tackle the 1 1/2-mile Belmont distance?

Dosage followers will say no while citing his Dosage Profile of 6.00 and a Profile that consists of a modest 14 points, numerics that say distance will be a problem.

Over the past 20 runnings of the Belmont, the highest Dosage Index of a winner was Commendable's 5.00 when he won in 2000. But Commendable also offered 42 points, meaning he had a much greater presence of Chefs-de-Race in his pedigree that presumably helped him overcome that perceived limitation.

Imawildandcrazyguy's performance in the Belmont should answer some interesting questions about the value of those numbers.

Quotable

Trainer Bill Kaplan, on Imawildandcrazyguy's perceived distance limitations prior to the Belmont Stakes (G1):

"He needs 2 1/2-miles but he'll have to settle for 1 1/2-miles. All along, the Belmont has been our primary goal."
