OBS March sale catalogs available online

Posted: Wednesday, February 08, 2012 11:23 AM

Edited press release

Catalogs for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s 2012 March sale of selected two-year-olds in training are now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. The website has been redesigned and features a sortable master index for the catalog, daily pedigree updates as well as under tack show videos and results.

A total of 362 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day OBS sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13 and 14, with both sessions beginning at 11 a.m. The Under Tack Show is set for 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 8 (Hips 1-180), and Friday, March 9 (Hips 181-362). Both the Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website. The 23rd annual OBS Championship Stakes races will be run on Monday, March 12, with first post time at 1 p.m.

The March Sale has long been a source of top class racehorses, as OBS Selected Two-Year-Old Sales have produced 35 millionaires, winners of 17 Eclipse Awards and 11 Breeders’ Cup victories.

In 2011, more than a dozen OBS March graduates were graded stakes winners, with Farnsworth Stables LLC’s Ask the Moon scoring a pair of grade one victories, capturing both the Ruffian Invitational and Personal Ensign Stakes at the prestigious Saratoga meeting. The daughter of Malibu Moon was sold for $125,000 by Nick de Meric, Agent, at the 2007 OBS March Sale.

Peachtree Stable’s Plum Pretty posted two graded wins, highlighted by her victory in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in May. Kirkwood Stables, Agent, sold the three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro for $130,000 at the 2010 OBS March Sale. It’s the second straight Kentucky Oaks score by an OBS two year old sale graduate, as Blind Luck was the 2010 winner.

Shivananda Parbhoo’s Giant Ryan enjoyed a six race win streak in 2011 that culminated with a half length victory in the Vosburgh Invitational Stakes (G1) at Belmont in October. The son of Freud, a three-time OBS graduate, was consigned by M & H Training and Sales, Agent, to the 2008 March Sale.

Graduates of last year’s sale have already had a major impact, with Klaravich Stables Inc. & William H. Lawrence's Currency Swap breaking his maiden at first asking and then winning Saratoga's Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (G1) in his second trip to the post. The High Cotton colt was consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent.

Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman’s Secret Circle’s first three starts all ended in victory, the third a win in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint. The colt by Eddington was sold for $165,000 by Flying Fish, Agent.

Jeffrey Bloom’s precocious Majestic City was the first graded winner from last year’s March Sale, scoring a 2-1/4 length victory in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3) in July. The City Zip colt brought $180,000 when purchased out of the Bo Hunt consignment.  In addition, John C. Oxley’s Northern Passion, sold for $220,000 by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, won Woodbine’s Natalma Stakes (Can-G3) and Frank Fletcher’s Rocket Twentyone, sold for $300,000 by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, took the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (G3). In all, 34 graduates of the 2011 March Sale graduates have won or placed in stakes to date.

The 2012 March Sale features a strong stallion lineup reading like a who’s who from the upper reaches of the sire leader boards. Last year’s top five, Distorted Humor, Smart Strike, Tapit, Giant’s Causeway and and Malibu Moon are represented, as are A.P. Indy, Empire Maker, More Than Ready, Speightstown, Medaglia d’Oro, Indian Charlie, Bernardini, Arch, Candy Ride (ARG), War Front and Leroidesanimaux (Brz). Last year’s leading freshman sires Hard Spun and Scat Daddy and first crop sires Curlin and Big Brown also have offspring in the sale.

In addition to catalogs for upcoming sales, the OBS website includes sales results, the latest news regarding OBS graduates, sales schedules, nominations, credit requests, travel information and other news relevant to OBS consignors and customers. E-Mail should be addressed to obs@obssales.com. For catalogs or more information regarding the OBS March Sale or OBS website, please call (352) 237-2154.
