With the number of horses to enter the ring cut significantly, it was no shock that total sales declined Monday at the Barretts Equine Ltd. January mixed sale in Pomona, California.
However, the horses that did go through the sale drew more than their counterparts from last year’s sale.
Total sales in 2012 fell 27.7% from $1,359,400 to $982,500. The 36.7% decline in horses sold certainly had an effect on the totals, with 162 horses sold this year compared with 256 horses in 2011.
The buy-back rate rose at the 2012 sale from 26.2% last year to 33.3%.
While total sales fell due to a smaller catalog, the averages did enjoy a slight boost during the 2012 sale. The average sale price of $6,065 was a 14.2% increase from last year’s figure of $5,310, while the median rose 20% from $2,500 to $3,000.
The top-priced horse of the sale was Sci Fi Kin, a winning 13-year-old mare by Siphon (Brz) who sold to Ron Stolich for $60,000.
Sci Fi Kin has produced three winners from four starters, including Grade 2 winner Pretty Unusual and stakes placed Jax El. She was sold in foal to Unusual Heat, to whom she has been bred exclusively since 2004.
Consigned by Harris Farms, agent, Sci Fi Kin is out of multiple graded-stakes-winning Time to Explode mare Akinemod, dam of five winners from seven starters.
A chestnut colt by Awesome Gambler led the newly turned two-year-olds, selling to trainer Doug O’Neill for the sale’s second-highest price of $40,000. The chestnut colt, consigned by Lovacres Ranch, agent, is out of the multiple stakes-placed Ascot Knight mare Rachel’s Edition, a producer of five winners from as many starters.
The highest-priced short yearling was a bay colt by Rock Hard Ten out of the unraced French Deputy mare La Treizieme, a producer of two winners from as many starters. Consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent, the colt sold to Archer Bloodstock for $20,000.
Havens Bloodstock Agency Inc, agent, led all consignors by total receipts with 46 horses sold for $231,100. The consignment was led by Alala, a four-year-old Salt Lake filly purchased Car-Den Racing Stable for $30,000, tied for the third-highest price of the sale.
Gary Danelson was the leading buyer at the Barretts sale, with three horses purchased for a total of $67,000. His biggest purchase was three-year-old Terrell colt Vee Voom Rhules, whom he bought from consignor Mary Knight, agent for $29,000.
