Bruce Lunsford had a lot of fun racing 2004 Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Madcap Escapade and bid $900,000 on Monday night in hopes that her daughter by A.P. Indy will help him relive some of those memories.
Lunsford bred the filly in partnership with consignor John G. Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale Farm.
“I've always wanted to keep a filly out of that family and I've always kind of wanted an A.P. Indy mare,” Lunsford said. “I know the family and I know the horse, so I talked to John about it today and said I was going to do this.
“She brings back a lot of memories, so maybe I'll get lucky and make a few more.”
Lunsford paid $160,000 through trainer Frank Brothers for Madcap Escapade, by Hennessy, at the 2002 Keeneland September sale, and she won seven of nine starts at three and four, including the Princess Rooney Handicap (G2) and four other stakes in addition to the Ashland.
Lunsford sold Madcap Escapade for $6-million, in foal to Pulpit, to a partnership between Sikura and Mike Moreno's Southern Equine during the 2006 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The resulting foal, Mi Sueno, won the 2009 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) for Southern Equine.
In 2008, Lunsford bought back into Madcap Escapade when Sikura signed the ticket for the new partnership at $3.1-million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale.
The price for the A.P. Indy filly matched the $900,000 Lael Stable paid for a daughter of Dynaformer earlier in the evening.
