Stormy Atlantic filly tops selected session of Canadian-bred sale

Posted: Wednesday, September 08, 2010 3:35 PM

Stormy Atlantic filly brought $124,012 ($130,000 Canadian) to top the selected session of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) Canadian-bred yearling sale on Tuesday at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion in Toronto.

The organization reported the sale of 128 horses for $3,516,903 ($3,686,700 Canadian). The average price was $27,475 ($28,802 Canadian).

The dark bay or brown filly was purchased by Anthony Goswell, agent for Dick Bonnycastle’s Harlequin Ranches through Richard G. Hogan, agent. The filly is the first foal of the Theatrical (Ire) mare Theatre Fan, a half sister to Mien, dam of 2008 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Big Brown.

A dark bay colt by Canadian champion Perfect Soul (Ire) out of the Woodman mare Timber Ice drew the top price for a male, going for $114,473 ($120,000 Canadian) to William Werner through Cara Bloodstock, agent.

Total receipts and horses not sold both declined compared with 2009’s sale while average price dropped 4%.

“There is tremendous vitality in Woodbine’s racing program; unfortunately, these figures prove the benefits have not yet trickled down to positive numbers for our breeders,” said Gail Wood, sales chair.

The open session of the sale takes place Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT.
