The first session of the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale, which comprises the first three days, closed Wednesday with economic indicators swelling across the board.
In fact, total sales, average price, and median all were up more than 21%, compared with the three-day first session in 2009.
William Inglis and Son Ltd. reported 396 yearlings from 504 offered as sold for $25,645,456 ($28,418,500 Australian), an increase of 21.6% and clearance rate of 78.6%.
Average price ballooned 29.6% to $64,761 ($71,764 Australian), and median is up 22.2% at $49,633 ($55,000 Australian).
“The record of Melbourne graduates speaks for itself and with that reputation growing all the time, there was plenty of incentive for buyers to be here at Oaklands this week to secure the stars of tomorrow,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.
“Vendors at this sale have continued to offer outstanding prospects and we are very pleased to see them rewarded with the results that have unfolded here over the past three days.”
The four-day sale concludes Thursday with the one-day second session.
Two yearlings by Redoute’s Choice brought $361,425 ($400,000 Australian) on day two to top the first session. Bill Mitchell purchased a bay or brown filly out of New Zealand Group 2 winner Maze, by Housebuster, from the consignment of Bellerive Stud, agent. Dean Hawthorne matched the price for a bay or brown colt by Redoute’s Choice out of the Pancho Villa mare Oceanette from the consignment of Arrowfield Stud, agent.
Wednesday’s top-priced yearling was a Starcraft (NZ) colt secured for $270,726 ($300,000 Australian) by Leon McDonald. The chestnut colt out of stakes winner Tayasu Run, by Tayasu Tsuyoshi, was offered by Mill Park, agent
“It is worth noting that more than a third of the stakes winners from this sale in the past two seasons sold for $50,000 (Australian) or less and there are some very nice yearlings still to go through the ring tomorrow,” Heagney said.
