Trade was lively during the opening session of the Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale on Monday at Oaklands, with total sales, average price, and median all up at least 20% compared with last year’s first session.
William Inglis and Son Ltd. reported 126 yearlings as sold from 170 offered for total sales of $8,065,310 ($9,007,500 Australian), an increase of 28% from day one last year.
Average price rose 30% to $64,010 ($71,488 Australian), and median was up 20% at $53,724 ($60,000 Australian). The clearance rate was 74.1%.
“The day one clearance of 74.1% has been comparable to the sales conducted so far this year,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Peter Heagney said. “The rise in average is exceptional, but there is still a lot of selling ahead of us.”
Monday’s session topper was a gray colt by Exceed and Excel purchased by Mick Price and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds for $268,619 ($300,000 Australian). Consigned by Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, agent, the session topper is the first foal produced by 2006 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Aus-G2) winner De Lago Mist, by Encosta de Lago.
The Premier yearling sale continues through Thursday with sessions beginning daily at 11 a.m. local time.
