Craig consignment highlights
Barretts January mixed sale

Posted: Sunday, January 24, 2010 5:25 PM

A major reduction of the Craig Family Trust will anchor the Barretts Equine Ltd. January mixed sale, which is set for Monday and Tuesday at Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona, California.

There are 539 horses cataloged for the sale with the Craig dispersal featuring 44 horses to be offered without reserves.

Grant Hofmans, agent, will handle the Craig consignment, which is dominated by third-crop sire Candy Ride (Arg), a Grade 1 winner campaigned by weight loss and nutrition company tycoons Sid and Jenny Craig. Among the offerings by Candy Ride are nine horses of racing age, eight two-year-olds, and eight yearlings.

Sid Craig died in 2008 at age 76 at his home in Del Mar, California, after a long illness. Jenny Craig kept a majority share in Candy Ride, who is standing this season at Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky. The couple raced a number of prominent Thoroughbreds, including Racing Hall of Fame member Paseana (Arg) and 1992 Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) winner Dr Devious (Ire).

Hofmans, son of trainer David Hofmans, is the farm manager for Jenny Craig’s Rancho Paseana, the former Rancho del Rayo training center owned by late multiple Eclipse Award-winning owner Gene Klein, who owned the National Football League’s San Diego Chargers.

The Craig consignment is part of a downsizing of Jenny Craig’s equine holdings, Hofmans told Daily Racing Form. Craig’s racing stable includes Grade 3 winner Chocolate Candy, a homebred Candy Ride colt who provided her with an emotional journey along the Triple Crown trail last year. He is training toward a four-year-old campaign as Jenny Craig continues her participation in Thoroughbred racing.

The Craig consignment includes Candy Ride yearlings out of multiple Grade 1 winner Alpride (Ire) and Argentine champion Ivory Tower (Arg) as well as a pair of half sisters to Chocolate Candy—13-year-old Danzing Crown, by Danzig, and six-year-old Gentleman’s Crown, by Gentleman (Arg). Both are offered in foal to Candy Ride.

Other horses cataloged for the sale from various consignors include short yearlings and two-year-olds by stallions such as D'wildcat, E Dubai, English Channel, Grand Slam, Holy Bull, In Excess (Ire), Lemon Drop Kid, Quiet American, Silver Train, Tale of the Cat, Tiznow, and Unusual Heat.

Broodmares in the catalog are in foal to stallions such as After Market, Bluegrass Cat, Half Ours, Master Command, McCann's Mojave, Notional, Salt Lake, Sun King, Surf Cat, and Tribal Rule.

Live interactive bidding on the January mixed sale will be available to registered bidders.
