A stallion season donated by Darley paid dividends for the University of Kentucky’s equine studies program on Monday at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale.
The college’s equine program sold a filly by 2009 champion freshman sire Offlee Wild for $22,000. The filly out of the Distant View mare Distant Vision was one of five yearlings prepped by University of Kentucky students at the university’s Main Chance Farm and offered on Monday.
Four of the yearlings sold for a total of $31,500. The proceeds will help pay the costs of the program, said equine nutrition professor Laurie Lawrence, Ph.D.
“The students are there when the mare goes to the breeding shed, when they foal, and when they need to be fed and prepped,” Lawrence said. “It’s a great learning experience.”
Ten students work at the farm, which is run by Brittney Gamler and Bryan Cassill. There are about 120 students enrolled in the University of Kentucky’s undergraduate equine major, which the university expanded and enhanced in 2007.
“It’s a good program that helps young people get into the industry, so we were happy to be involved,” said Kate McMahon, Darley’s stallion nominations manager.
