New Zealand Bloodstock’s select yearling sale finished its three-day run at the Karaka Sales Complex in Auckland on Friday with significant increases over last year’s numbers.
A total of 438 horses were reported as sold for $15,804,112 ($22,927,500 New Zealand), a 34.6% increase over 2009 despite selling 18 fewer horses this year.
Average price increased 40.1% to $36,083 ($52,346 New Zealand), and median increased 33.3% to $27,572 ($40,000). The clearance rate improved from 73% last year to 78%.
New Zealand Bloodstock Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela said the energy from the premier session, which was up 22.6% in total sales, flowed through to the select sessions.
“When we were selecting for the sale this year, we saw a host of yearlings that in years past might have been in premier now featuring in the select session, so we knew the strength was there. But it has been great to see the buyers still hard at battle for the lots they want,” Vela said. “The select sale is growing year by year in its own right, and the results are speaking for themselves. More and more buyers are staying on for this session, and the results are reflecting this growing competition.”
An Elusive City colt out of Della Mimosa, by Generous, sold on Friday for $172,327 ($250,000 New Zealand) to top the select sessions. O’Brien Thoroughbreds purchased the select topper from the consignment of Haunui Farm.
With two festival sessions scheduled for Sunday and Monday, the combined gross of $60,866,598 ($88,301,000 New Zealand) already is the second-highest in the sale’s history.
