Tattersalls reported that 147 horses sold for $1,655,101 (991,500 guineas) at its February mixed sale on Thursday at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, England.
Total sales were up 28.7% compared with last year, but offerings were up 50.3% while the number sold was up 36.1%. Average was up 3% at $11,259 (6,745 guineas) while median was level at $5,843 (3,500 guineas).
The clearance rate was 63.1%.
“It would be fair to say that this was not a vintage February Sale catalogue, but there was plenty of competition for quality lots and the usual combination of domestic and international demand that typifies so many sales at Tattersalls,” Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said. “The market does, however, remain selective, which serves as a reminder that we still face testing times.
“Nevertheless, turnover and average have both shown increases on last year’s February sale, and without doubt there will be success stories to emerge from today’s sale to go with the three 2009 Group 1 producers purchased at previous Tattersalls February sales.”
Dwayne Woods, agent, bought the sale topper, the four-year-old Danehill Dancer filly Rhythm Queen, for $91,811 (55,000 guineas). Rhythm Queen, winless in two starts, is out of the Old Vic mare Flawly (GB) and is a half sister to French classic-placed Group 3 winner Best Name (GB).
John Troy consigned the sale topper. Woods bought her on behalf of Andrew Tinkler.
