Giant’s Causeway colt sells
for $260,000 at Keeneland

Giant’s Causeway colt sold for $260,000 on Tuesday at the Keeneland September yearling sale, which continued its consistent pattern of declines from the 2008 sale.

Keeneland reported 274 horses as sold for $9,744,700, a 31% decline from the corresponding day last year. Average decreased 32% to $35,565, and median dropped 37.5% to $25,000. Buy-back rate was at 25%, slightly lower than 28% during last year's eighth session.

All the Rage Partners, a pinhooking partnership formed by J.B. and Kevin McKathan, bought the session-topping colt, the third foal out of multiple graded stakes winner Smok’n Frolic, a career earner of $1,534,720.

“I was really pleased to get that colt,” said J.B. McKathan. “He’s a big, black, beautiful horse. For a Giant’s Causeway, he was really athletic and refined. He looks fast. That’s my main criteria—look fast.”

Adena Springs bred and consigned the colt.

“On placement, you could argue he should have been a little bit closer to the front of the sale, but where he was here, he was the standout,” said Mark Roberts, general manager of Adena Springs South. “We see it everyday. The top horses in each session are still bringing plenty of money, and there’s nobody for anything less than that. There’s no money for the average horse right now.”

Two other horses brought $200,000 or more, and both were consigned by Lane’s End, agent.

Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds went to $230,000 for a Sky Mesa colt out of Boardroom Scandal, by Fusaichi Pegasus, and W.D. North Thoroughbreds bid $200,000 for a Dixie Union filly out of the Allen’s Prospect mare Icy Demeanor.

Cumulatively, Keeneland has reported 1,747 horses as sold for $171,778,500, a 41.9% decline from 2008 after eight days. Average price has dropped 34.5% at $98,328, and median is down 42.1% at $55,000.

The overall buy-back rate is 30.9%, compared with 25.2% at this point in the sale a year ago.

Session nine of the 14-session sale begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. EDT.
