John Oxley purchased a Street Cry (Ire) filly for $370,000 to top the sixth session of the Keeneland September yearling sale on Sunday, but the market correction continued with steep declines across the board at the Lexington auction.
Keeneland reported 255 yearlings from 365 offered as sold for $14,843,000, a 45.2% decline compared with $27,096,500 in total sales at last year’s corresponding session. Average price declined by 36.4% to $58,208, and median was down 35.7% to $45,000.
The buy-back rate was 30.1%, compared with 21.5% on day six last year.
Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent, the Street Cry filly was bred in Kentucky by O’Rourke’s Silver Springs Stud Farm. She is the second foal out of the winning Dynaformer mare Manda Island, a half sister to Group 3-placed stakes winner Capistrano Day and three other stakes-placed winners. The session topper’s grandam is 1991 Beverly Hills Handicap (G1) winner Alcando (Ire).
A dark bay or brown filly by Forest Wildcat brought the second-highest price of the session at $270,000 on a bid from Stockplace. A half sister to stakes winner Plagiarist, the filly is out of the Seattle Slew mare Feature Article.
William B. Harrigan Sales Agency, agent, consigned the filly. She was bred in Kentucky by William Harrigan and Mike Pietrangelo.
John Ferguson purchased the top-priced colt of the sixth session, going to $240,000 for a chestnut colt by first-crop stallion Henny Hughes. A half brother to multiple graded stakes winner West Virginia and stakes winner Platinum Girl, the Henny Hughes colt is out of the winning Kennedy Road mare Wild and Wonderful. Elm Tree Farm as agent consigned the colt, who was bred in Canada by James Bentley Begg.
Through six days, total sales are down 42.5% to $150,942,000, compared with $262,472,200 after six sessions last year. Average price has declined by 32.1% to $126,206, while the median is down 36% to $80,000.
The sale continues Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.
