Baffert buys Awesome Again colt for $625,000

Trainer Bob Baffert snagged an Awesome Again colt out of Grade 1 winner Forest Secrets for $625,000, the highest price for a colt thus far during the third session of the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Gainesway consigned the half brother to Grade 2-placed winner Forest Command, by Monarchos.

Debby Oxley bred the colt and raced Forest Secrets, a Forest Wildcat mare who won the 2001 Acorn Stakes (G1) and Falls City Handicap (G3) and ’02 Rampart Handicap (G2).

Baffert signed the ticket for an undisclosed client.

“He looks like a horse who will improve a lot,” Baffert said. “The frame is there, he’ll fill in, and he already has a very sensible mind. You can see the athletic ability with just the way he walked and move. I like his frame a lot.”

The Awesome Again colt surpassed a $610,000 Dynaformer colt as Wednesday’s highest-priced colt on Wednesday. He is the most expensive Awesome Again yearling to sell at public auction since Clarence Scharbauer Jr. bought a half sister to Afleet Alex for $1.4-million from Gainesway’s consignment in the 2007 Keeneland September sale.

“He’s a beautiful horse,” Baffert said.
