Total sales drop at New York fall mixed sale

Posted: Sunday, October 18, 2009 8:36 PM

Total sales plummeted on Sunday at the New York Breeders’ Sales Co. fall breeding stock sale and the buy-back rated rose to 60.8%.

The New York Breeders’ Sales Co. reported 58 of 148 horses offered as sold for $627,900, a 61.5% decline compared with last year’s sale, when 149 of 325 horses offered sold for $1,631,150.

With the significantly smaller catalog, average price remained stable at $10,826, a 1.1% decline compared with $10,947 in 2008. Median declined 18% from $5,000 to $4,100.

Weanlings dominated the fall breeding stock sale, accounting for $536,300 of the $627,900 in total sales. Only 15 broodmares sold for a total of $37,600.

Buzz Chace, agent for West Point Thoroughbreds, purchased the sale topper, a bay weanling filly by City Zip. Consigned by Waldorf Farm, agent, the New York-bred filly is out of the Capote mare Capote’s Tune, a half sister to Grade 2 winner Parisian Flight and multiple stakes winner Concorde’s Tune.

A weanling filly by Gone West brought the second-highest price of the sale. Showcase Stables went to $50,000 to secure the bay filly from the consignment of Saratoga Glen Farm, agent. She is out of the Slew City Slew mare Stardust Seattle, a half sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Singletary.

The top price for a broodmare at the sale was $7,000. Scott Van Laer purchased Affirm Promise, a stakes-placed winning 16-year-old Affirmed mare from the consignment of McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, agent. Out of the winning Fabled Monarch mare Jay’s Promise, Affirm Promise has produced four winners from five starters, including Grade 3-placed winner I Promise.
