Average drops 25.6% at California Cup sale

Average price dropped 25.6% in the Barretts Equine Ltd. California Cup yearling sale on Monday in Pomona, California.
Barretts, which conducted the sale as co-sponsor with the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, reported sales of 178 of the 258 yearlings offered for a total of $2,209,600, down 11.1% from last year’s total of $2,486,600 for 149 yearlings sold. The sale’s average was $12,413, down from $16,689 in 2008.
The sale’s buy-back rate rose slightly with 31%, compared to 28.4% last year.
The sale’s most expensive price was $120,000 for a Tiznow filly purchased by Sydney Belzberg’s Budget Stables from the consignment of Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent.
Bred in California by Northview Stallion Station, the filly is out of the Lion Hearted mare Storm Hearted.
The most expensive colt was a son of Sky Mesa named Three Scoops who sold for $65,000 to Lebherz Thoroughbreds from consignor Special T Thoroughbreds, agent for Win More Farm.
Dick London was the leading buyer with two purchases for a total of $125,000.
Havens Bloodstock led the consignor list, selling 35 horses for $444,900.
