Lease of Life brings top price at Keeneland sale

Posted: Saturday, November 21, 2009 6:32 PM

Jay Manoogian bought racing or stallion prospect Lease of Life for $110,000 to top Saturday’s session of Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale.

Manoogian purchased the four-year-old Cozzene colt from Mill Ridge Sales, agent. Lease of Life is out of the winning Graustark mare Kinema and is a full brother to 2001 Malibu (G1) and ’02 Strub (G2) Stakes winner and Central Kentucky sire Mizzen Mast.

Lease of Life has posted two wins, two seconds, and one third-place finish from nine starts over two seasons for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms.

On Saturday, Keeneland reported 154 horses from 202 offered as sold for total receipts of $1,195,800, down 52.5% from last year’s corresponding session, when 209 horses brought $2,517,000.

The session average of $7,765 dropped 35.5% from last year’s $12,043, while the median decreased 58.8% from $8,500 to $3,500. The buy-back rate was 23.8% compared with 22.6% during last year’s corresponding session.

Zuri Ridge, in foal to Grade 1 winner City Zip, brought the day’s second-highest price of $90,000 from Lane’s End Bloodstock. A 13-year-old mare by Cox’s Ridge out of the Danzig mare Zuri, Zuri Ridge is a half sister to 2003 Diana (G1) and ’01 Garden City Breeders’ Cup (G1) Handicaps winner Voodoo Dancer. She was consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent for the complete dispersal of Windfields Farm.

With one day remaining, a total of 2,648 horses from 3,359 offered have been sold for total receipts of $158,924,200, down 12.4% from last year’s corresponding period, when 2,438 horses sold for $181,386,000. The average of $60,017 represents a 19.3% drop from $74,400 a year ago, while the median is down 25% from $28,000 a year ago to $21,000.
