Coteau Grove Farms went to $255,000 to buy Clear Sailing, a three-year-old Empire Maker filly, to top Tuesday’s session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Larry Richardson, agent for Coteau Grove, signed the ticket for the bay filly out of Steady Course, by Old Trieste, from the Overbrook Farm dispersal, Eaton Sales, agent.
On Tuesday, Keeneland reported that 241 horses sold from 309 offered for total sales of $4,902,600, a 12.1% decline compared with last year, when 192 horses sold for $5,579,600. The average price dropped 30%, from $29,060 to $20,433, while the median price fell 40.9% from $22,000 to $13,000. The buy-back rate was 22%, an improvement compared with the 31.2% buy-back rate from last year’s comparative session.
Richardson also bought the day’s highest–priced weanling, paying $71,000 for a Hat Trick (Jpn) colt out of the Crafty Prospector mare Steal a Heart. Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services consigned the colt as agent for Harford Hill Farm.
Passiflora, an unraced broodmare prospect, brought the second-highest price of the session, $180,000, when Freyer Bloodstock purchased the three-year-old Empire Maker filly out of stakes-placed Quick to Please, a full sister to English champion and sire Danehill, from the consignment of Mill Ridge Sales, agent.
Through eight days of the 13-day auction, 1,786 horses have been sold for $150,359,400 for an average price of $84,188 and a median of $39,000. At this point in the sale last year, 1,589 horses had been sold for $167,899,300 for an average price of $105,663 and a median of $50,000.
The sale continues through Sunday with sessions starting daily at 10 a.m. EST.
