Representing the same undisclosed client who bought Mary Delaney for $850,000 earlier on Wednesday, Reynolds Bell Jr. went to $1.7-million for Grade 3 winner Summer Raven just after noon during the second session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Like Mary Delaney, Summer Raven was offered in the Overbrook Farm dispersal through consignor Eaton Sales, agent.
Overbrook had purchased the seven-year-old Summer Squall out of Rahy Rose, by Rahy, for $750,000 in the 2005 Keeneland November sale as a broodmare prospect.
“I like the family, I like the fact that she’s by Summer Squall,” Bell said. “Summer Bird is out of a Summer Squall mare. That would be one reason. He’s a nice broodmare sire, and Wild Rush is in the second dam. I thought he was a terrific sire. She’s a real attractive mare.”
Bell also mentioned the potential of Summer Raven’s two-year-old Unbridled’s Song colt, Winslow Homer, who won his second career start by three lengths on August 22 at Saratoga Race Course for Fox Hill Farms.
Summer Raven’s weanling filly by Pulpit followed her as the next horse through the sales ring and sold for $275,000 to Brushwood Stables.
Bell said his client is fairly new to the racing industry.
“He’s looking to put together a nice broodmare band to breed-to-race and sell,” Bell said. “He’s a bargain shopper, that’s for sure. He understands that there is some value in the market right now and that this mare might have cost $2.5-million last year.”
Summer Raven won the 2004 Tempted Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct for Edgewood Farm and trainer Todd Pletcher.
