Tiznow colt tops buyer's market at Barretts

by Lisa Groothedde

Tiznow colt sold for $300,000 to top the 2009 Barretts Equine Ltd. May sale of two-year-olds in training on Monday at Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona, California.

The colt was one of 11 horses to command a six-figure purchase price during the single session, but the sale closed with across-the-board declines.

From the 173 juveniles offered at the 2009 sale, Barretts reported 123 as sold for total receipts of $4,511,000, representing a 42.3% decline compared with last year’s gross of $7,816,400. Average price dropped 31% from $53,173 last year to $36,675, and median fell 16.7% from $24,000 to $20,000 this year. The buy-back rate provided some relief, dropping from 33.5% in 2008 to 28.9%.

“We had some good horses in here, but the top end is not what it was last year,” said Barretts Vice President Bill Baker. “There’s a general weakness in the buying population in Southern California.”

Consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds, agent for Vision Racing, the sale-topping colt was purchased by prominent California owners Gary and Wendy Broad.

The Florida-bred colt was listed as reserve not attained on a final bid of $210,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale. He resurfaced six months later at the 2009 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March sale of selected two-year-olds in training, in which he was purchased for $110,000 by Vision Racing from the consignment of Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables.

The sale topper worked an eighth of a mile in :10.40 at the May 8 under-tack show. Bearing a striking resemblance to his sire, the Tiznow colt is out of the stakes-winning Jeblar mare Jera, the dam of stakes-placed winner Tizthen, also by Tiznow, and three-year-old Jeranimo, the third-place finisher in the $200,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 14 at Santa Anita Park.

The Broads led all buyers at the 2009 Barretts May sale with their single purchase of the sale topper. The leading consignor by total sales was Hartley/ De Renzo Thoroughbreds with 13 two-year-olds reported as sold for $1,146,000.
