The first book of the Tattersalls October yearling sale will feature the only horse sired by ill-fated two-time European champion George Washington (Ire).
The bay filly, bred in Ireland by Azienda Agricola Loreto Luciani, will be offered by Gerry and Patricia Burke’s Gildawn Stud.
“Obviously, I have loved her from the moment I set eyes on her as a foal,” Gerry Burke said. “She has enormous quality and presence and a great deal of her father about her. We have had great success over the years at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale, and we have a lot to look forward to this year.”
George Washington, winner of the 2006 Stan James Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1), broke down in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) and was euthanized. The Breeders’ Cup was the fourth start of 2007 for the brilliant miler after he returned to training following a brief spell at stud that was unproductive due to sub-fertility.
The George Washington filly is the only horse by the 2005 European champion two-year-old male and 2006 European champion three-year-old male. She is out of group stakes producer Flawlessly, by Rainbow Quest.
“She is an outstanding physical specimen and of course she is unique,” Tattersalls Chairman Edmund Mahony said. “It is wonderfully appropriate that she will be sold at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale as her father, George Washington, was the [$2,050,335] 1,150,000 guineas sale topper at the first October Book 1 in 2004, and we also have George Washington’s three parts brother by Danehill Dancer in the sale.”
Bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables, the breeder of both George Washington and ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro, the Danehill Dancer sibling to George Washington also will be offered in the first book of the Tattersalls October sale. Out of the stakes-placed Alysheba mare Bordighera, the chestnut colt also is a half brother to European champion Grandera.
