Barretts summer sale posts across-the-board declines

Posted: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 7:46 PM

The Barretts Equine Ltd. summer sale of horses of racing age and two-year-olds in training posted double-digit declines in gross receipts, average price, and median, compared with last year’s sale.

The 2007 sale included four horses from the Meadow Creek Ranch dispersal that sold for a total of $957,500.

Barretts reported 65 horses from 97 offered as sold for total receipts of $445,050 during Tuesday’s one-day sale. Total receipts declined 73.5% compared with last year, when 89 horses brought $1,680,200.

Average price declined 63.7% from $18,879 last year to $6,847. This year’s median price of $3,700 was down 21.3% compared with $4,700 last year.

The buy-back rate increased from 28.2% last year to 33%.

Tuesday’s sale topper was stakes winner Leesider, who was purchased for $40,000 by Val-U-Chem Inc. Mary Knight, agent, consigned the Bertrando colt out of Sweet Paradise, by Storm Cat.

Leesider won the 2007 Cal National Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park for trainer Patrick Gallagher and previous owner Super Horse.

Art Sherman purchased a High Demand gelding out of Nordic Weather, by Summer Squall, for $30,000, the highest price for a two-year-old at the sale. Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent, consigned the dark bay or brown gelding, who is from the female family of multiple Grade 3 winner Thunder Regent.
