Double-digit increases highlight third Deauville session

Posted: Sunday, August 17, 2008 6:38 PM

The third session of the Arqana Deauville August yearling sale on Sunday posted double-digit increases across the board after the previous session closed with mixed results.

Total receipts ballooned 33.2% to $10,019,044 (6,818,000 euros) as 82 of 104 horses offered were reported as sold, compared with 75 horses sold at the corresponding session last year.

Average price increased 21.8% to $122,182 (83,146 euros) and median was up 18.2% to $95,517 (65,000 euros). The buy-back rate rose from 19.3% in 2007 to 21.1%.

John Ferguson, bloodstock adviser to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, purchased the session topper, a Verglas (Ire) colt, for $529,019 (360,000 euros).

The French-bred gray colt, consigned by breeder Haras des Sablonnets, is a full brother to Prix de Cabourg-Jockey Club de Turquie (Fr-G3) winner Silver Frost. His dam is the winning Anabaa mare Hidden Silver, a half sister to three French stakes winners, including Group 3 winners High Rock and Homeland (Fr).

Haras de Saint Pair landed the session’s highest-priced filly, a daughter of Dream Well (Fr) for $382,069 (260,000 euros).

From the consignment of breeder Haras du Ma, the brown Irish-bred filly is out of the winning Doyoun mare Diyawara, dam of Group 1-placed French Group 3 winner Viva Macau and Diyakalanie, the third-place finisher in the 2007 Prix de Diane Hermes (Fr-G1) (French Oaks).

The sale continues Monday with the fourth and final session.
