Half to Danehill tops Keeneland session


Earth Planet, a winning half brother to leading sire Danehill, topped the 14th session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale on Sunday.

Oscar Lobo purchased the four-year-old Distant View colt for $60,000 as a racing or stallion prospect from the consignment of Mill Ridge Sales, agent. Earth Planet amassed two wins, two seconds, and two thirds in nine starts for breeder Juddmonte Farms.

Out of the His Majesty mare Razyana, Earth Planet is a half brother to four group or graded stakes winners, including Danehill, the sire of a world-record 350 stakes winners through Saturday. Earth Planet’s grandam, Spring Adieu, is a half sister to breed-shaping sire and champion Northern Dancer.

Keeneland reported 189 of 249 horses offered as sold for $1,244,600, a 13.1% decline compared with $1,432,300 in total sales at the corresponding 2007 session. Average dipped 22.3% to $6,585, and median plummeted 50% to $3,000. The buy-back rate increased from 14.2% on day 14 last year to 24.1%.

Major General, a three-year-old Empire Maker colt, was purchased by Hutton and Capin for $55,000, the second-highest price at Sunday’s session. Consigned by Mill Ridge Farm, agent, Major General was offered as a racing or stallion prospect and also was bred by Juddmonte Farms.

Out of Grade 3 winner Out of Reach (GB), by Warning (GB), Major General has one second-place finish and one third-place finish in three starts.

A bay colt by Yes It’s True was purchased by Ardmore Stud, agent, for $52,000, the top price for a weanling on Sunday. Consigned by Moreau Bloodstock International, agent, the colt is out of the unraced Seeking the Gold mare Vision Quest, a half sister to multiple Grade 1-placed graded stakes winner Voodoo.

Keeneland reported 2,869 horses as sold for $184,888,400 through 14 days. Total sales are down 45.7% compared with $340,203,700 in total receipts after 14 sessions last year. Average price is down 38.1% to $64,443, and median has declined 37.1% to $22,000.

The Keeneland November sale concludes Monday, with the final session beginning at 10 a.m. EST.
