Tapit colt tops eighth Keeneland session

A colt by freshman sire Tapit sold for $250,000 on Monday to top the eighth session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Ben Glass, agent, purchased the session topper from the consignment of Elm Tree Farm, agent. A half brother to Grade 3-placed stakes winner Lyin’ Heart, the bay colt is out of the unplaced Green Dancer mare Rumba Punch, a half sister to multiple Grade 2-placed stakes winner The Lady’s Groom and stakes winner Marina de Chavon.

Weanling colts brought the six highest prices during the session, but the Keeneland November sale posted double-digit declines in total sales, average price, and median for the eighth straight day, compared with the record-setting 2007 sale.

Keeneland reported 192 of 279 horses offered as sold for total receipts of $5,579,600, a sharp 50.5% decline compared with $11,270,200 in total sales at the corresponding session last year.

Median declined 38.9% to $22,000, and average price dropped 37.1% to $29,060. The buy-back rate rose from 24.7% to 31.2%.

Blue Sky Stables purchased a gray or roan weanling colt by Borrego for $175,000, the second-highest price of the session. Consigned by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent for Mueller Farm, the colt is out of stakes-placed winner Wishful Legacy, by Lyphard’s Wish (Fr).

Stakes-placed winner Cordoba brought the highest price for a broodmare or broodmare prospect during Monday’s session. Hanzly Albina, agent, purchased the nine-year-old Unbridled mare, in foal to Dixie Union, for $100,000 from the consignment of James M. Herbener Jr., agent.

Cordoba won three of eight career starts and earned $104,427 in two seasons. A half sister to multiple Grade 1-placed winner Along the Sea, she is out of multiple graded stakes-placed winner Russian Flight (Ire), by Siberian Express.

Through eight days, Keeneland reported 1,589 horses as sold for $167,899,300, compared with $313,574,100 in total sales at the same point during the 2007 sale, which set a sale record for total receipts ($340,877,200) and equaled the record for seven-figure horses (39).

Average price is down 36.9% to $105,663, compared with $167,418 last year. Median has dipped 33.3% to $50,000, compared with $75,000 after eight days last year.

The 15-day auction continues through November 17 with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. EST daily.
