Forestry filly breezes fastest eighth at Barretts
by Pete Denk
A Forestry filly worked one furlong in :10, the fastest eighth-mile move on Monday at the second training preview for the Barretts Equine Ltd. March sale of selected two-year-olds in training at Fairplex Park in Pomona, California.
The Kentucky-bred filly is the first foal out of Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Holy Bubbette, by Holy Bull. She improved her time from the March 4 training preview, when she worked one furlong in :10.40.
The gray or roan filly is consigned by Scanlon Training Center, agent. George Bolton bought her for $240,000 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings.
“She prepped for the sale really well, but she scrambled a little bit at the first show and didn’t completely get a hold of the track,” consignor David Scanlon said. “We gave her another chance to show something special, and she did it today.”
Two horses from the B.C.3. Thoroughbreds consignment tied for the fastest quarter-mile breeze in :21.40—an Officer filly out of the Victory Gallop mare Hot Chipotle and a Formal Gold colt out of the Out of Place mare Squire Out Front.
Both horses improved from :21.80 in their first workout.
“Today, we came back with a few of our horses who didn’t show who they really were at the first training preview,” said B.C.3.’s John Brocklebank. “We feel so strong about our group as a whole this year, and we’re very enthusiastic that a few more of them stepped to the plate today.”
Less than half of the horses who performed at the March 4 training preview worked back on Monday, with 62 juveniles recording timed workouts. Another seven horses galloped.
“It’s a trend in the industry of consignors focusing on the first show,” said Barretts President Jerry McMahon. “If a horse performs well at the first preview, they tend not to bring them back, and that seems acceptable to buyers.”
McMahon was pleased with both preview days.
“The track was real consistent, and I thought there was a pretty good variety of works,” McMahon said. “I felt it was a real safe racetrack and both training previews went off really well.”
The sale is scheduled for Wednesday, beginning at 2 p.m. PDT. Horse Racing Television (HRTV) is providing live coverage.
