Fasig-Tipton winter mixed sale posts early gains

Buoyed by six six-figure purchases, the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale on Sunday closed with increases in total receipts, average price, and median.

Fasig-Tipton reported 160 horses as sold from 206 offered for $3,274,000, a 21.7% increase compared with the corresponding 2007 session, in which 195 horses brought $2,689,300.

Average price soared to $20,462, a 48.4% rise compared with $13,791 on day one last year. Median rose 4.2% to $6,250.

The buy-back rate decreased from 25.6% a year ago to 22.3% during the opening session this year.

John Lossen, agent, went to $320,000 to secure the session topper, stakes winner Placid Lake, from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent.

A half sister to Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Smoke Chaser, Placid Lake won the Glendale Handicap on January 5 at Turf Paradise and followed with a third-place finish in the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino Sunshine Millions Filly and mare Turf Stakes on January 26 at Santa Anita Park.

A six-year-old Greenwood Lake mare, Placid Lake is out of stakes winner Fortune Forty Four, by Fortunate Prospect. Sold as a racing or broodmare prospect, Placid Lake has won five of 14 starts and earned $223,550.

Mike Abraham purchased Trickski, a ten-year-old Peteski mare, for $285,000 from the consignment of Legacy Bloodstock, agent. Trickski is the dam of 2007 La Brea Stakes (G1) winner Dearest Trickski, who won the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint on January 26.

Trickski won one of 21 career starts and finished third in the 2001 Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs. A half sister to stakes winners Tricky Storm and Tricky Band, Trickski is out of the winning Phone Trick mare Explosive Trick.

Harley Clemons, agent, purchased the top-priced yearling of the session. Clemons went to $60,000 to secure a Congaree filly out of stakes winner Mike’s Wildcat, by Forest Wildcat, from the consignment of Legacy Bloodstock, agent.

The second session of the two-day winter mixed sale begins at 11 a.m. EST on Monday.
