Tattersalls Craven sale sets records across the board

A filly by Mr. Greeley brought a sale-topping $1,111,860 on Thursday on the final day of the Tattersalls Craven breeze-up sale for two-year-olds at Park Paddocks in Newmarket.

The two-day sale concluded with records across the board for a European breeze-up sale as 116 horses were sold for $24,469,156 (11,884,000 guineas), up 35% from last year’s sale. Average price ballooned 40% to $210,940 (102,448 guineas), and median rose 27% to $144,130 (70,000 guineas).

Sixteen horses sold for $411,800 (200,000 guineas) or more compared with five last year. Ten horses sold for $617,700 (300,000 guineas) or more.

“There has been understandable apprehension in the lead up to the breeze-up season, but even without the prevailing economic uncertainties we would have to be pleased with the way the Craven breeze-up has gone this week,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.

“The sale has broken records across the board, and an average over [$205,900] 100,000 guineas would have been unthinkable a few years ago. As ever, the sale’s success is a massive tribute to the vendors and it is their support and professionalism which continues to attract top owners from throughout the world in ever increasing numbers.”

Agent Kerri Radcliffe purchased the Mr. Greeley filly, who was consigned by Mocklershill Stables, Ireland, on behalf of a British-based client. The bay filly is out of the winning Silver Hawk mare Silver Kestrel, a half sister to a pair of stakes-placed winners in Southern California. Bred in Great Britain, she sold for $132,921 at the Tattersalls October yearling sale.

A Dansili (GB) colt brought the sale’s second-highest price of $1,008,910 (490,000 guineas). Sir Robert Ogden secured the French-bred bay colt out of the Red Ransom mare Red Bravo who was sold last August at Deauville for $188,874. Red Bravo, who has produced a winner from her only starter, is a half sister to Italian classic-placed Bravo Tazio and English Group 3 winners Steppe Dancer and St Mawes
