Darley to sponsor Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. Day of Champions

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2007 1:40 PM

The 2008 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. Day of Champions will be held on February 11, the day before the OBSC sale of selected two-year-olds in training, and will be sponsored by Darley.

The five-race card will be supplemented with a combination of increased purses and seasons to three Darley stallions.

“We are delighted to welcome Darley’s participation in our day of champions,” OBSC President Tom Chiota said. “It will expand the relationship we enjoy with them and focus attention on the Florida Thoroughbred industry.”

The races will be contested on the new all-weather Safetrack synthetic surface.

The four Darley OBSC races are open to three-year-olds of 2008 which have gone through the auction ring at an OBSC sale.

The purse for the Darley OBSC Championship Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race for colts and geldings, will increase from $100,000 to $150,000. The purse for the Darley OBSC Sprint, a six-furlong race for colts and geldings, will increase from $50,000 to $75,000.

The other three races will remain at the same purse value as last year but will offer a choice of a 2008 or ’09 season to Darley stallions.

Winner of the $100,000 Darley OBSC Championship Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies, will receive a breeding season to Henny Hughes, who stands for $40,000 at Darley in Lexington. The winner of the $50,000 Darley OBSC Sprint, a six-furlong race for fillies, will receive a breeding season to Rockport Harbor, who stands for $20,000.

Winner of the $50,000 Florida Thoroughbred Charities Stakes, a five-furlong race, will receive a breeding season to Kafwain, who stands for $10,000. The race is co-sponsored by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and is open to progeny of stallions whose seasons were donated to selected charity auctions.
