The Tattersalls Ltd. December breeding stock sale carried plenty of momentum into the second session after posting significant increases in total receipts and average price on Monday. Day two delivered another session of stellar results as three horses brought more than $6-million and total receipts rose 20.5% to $77,870,351 (36,084,500 guineas), most in European auction history.
The previous record was established during the corresponding 2006 session. Average price jumped 48.8% to $435,190 (201,589 guineas), compared with day two last year.
John Ferguson, representative for Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid al Maktoum, went to $6,908,160 (3,200 guineas) to purchase session topper Ocean Silk, a Group1-placed stakes winner by Dynaformer in foal to Pivotal.
Sheikh Mohammed also purchased the two highest-priced horses during the first session on Monday—Group 1 winner Satwa Queen (Fr) for $7,339,920 (3.4-million guineas) and Group 2 winner Sander Camillo for $6,908,160 (3.2-million guineas).
Consigned by Swettenham Stud, Ocean Silk is out of the winning Kingmambo mare Mambo Jambo, a full sister to dual French classic winner and 2005 European champion three-year-old filly Divine Proportions. Ocean Silk, runner-up in the 2003 Ashton Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-G1), placed in four other group or graded stakes in 22 career starts and earned $370,706.
Mandellicht, dam of three-time Group 1 winner Manduro, and multiple Grade 1 winner Angara (GB) were both purchased for $6,476,400 (3-million guineas).
R. O’Gorman Bloodstock Ltd. purchased Mandellicht, a 13-year-old Be My Guest mare, from the consignment of Ronald Rauscher, agent. Out of the winning Elektrant mare Mandelauge, stakes-placed winner Mandellicht has produced four winners from five starters, including German classic-placed Mandela (Ger), who finished third in the 2004 Santa Barbara Handicap (G2).
Mandellicht is carrying a full sibling to Manduro, winner this year of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Eng-G1), Prix de Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (Fr-G1), and Prix d’Ispahan (Fr-G1).
London Thoroughbred Services secured Angara, winner of the 2005 Beverly D. Stakes (G1) and ’06 Diana Stakes (G1), from the consignment of Swettenham Stud. The six-year-old Alzao mare is in foal to Montjeu (GB).
Out of the Alleged mare Ange Bleu, Angara is from the female family of champions Cape Verdi (Ire) and *Ashmore, 1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Arcangues, French classic winner Aquarelliste, and Grade 1 winner Artiste Royal (Ire).
