Sky Mesa yearling brings top price at WTBA sale

Posted: Monday, December 03, 2007 3:05 PM

A Kentucky-bred yearling colt by freshman sire Sky Mesa brought the top price of $24,000 at the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association annual winter mixed sale on Sunday at Emerald Downs.

Consigned by Woodstead Farm, agent, the half brother to 2000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) winner Archer City Slew was purchased by Mike and Amy Feuerborn of Auburn, Washington, who campaigned 2007 WTBA Lads Stakes winner Gallon.

Out of the Miswaki mare I’m Yours Joe, the colt topped a list of 83 yearlings sold for an average price of $3,716.

Another yearling accounted for the second-highest price as Al Strumecki of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, paid $20,000 for a Free At Last colt out of the stakes-winning Drone mare Shimmer of Silk.

Consigned by Rick and Debbie Pabst’s Blue Ribbon Farm, the youngster is a half brother to 2006 Washington champion three-year-old filly She’s All Silk.

Longtime WTBA general manager Ralph Vacca, who is retiring on December 31, made his ownership debut as the newly formed Doo-Dah Stable, the nom de course for Vacca and Kenneth Alhadeff, purchased a yearling filly by Washington’s leading juvenile and freshman sire Polish Gift for $12,000. Out of the Tough Knight mare Poker Knight, she was consigned by Allaire Farms, agent.

A weanling filly from the second crop of Grade 2 winner Even the Score topped the list of 17 weanlings sold. Consigned by Woodstead Farm, agent, the filly was purchased for $19,000 by Claudia Atwell Canouse.

Thirty broodmares sold for an average of $3,517, topped by 13-year-old Inspired Verse, dam of Washington champion Jumron Won, purchased for $15,500 by Amar Jeet Jatana from the Prisco Vacca Farms consignment. Inspired Verse is in foal to Matty G.

Full Scream Ahead, a stakes winner of $319,550 who has been bred to Cahill Road, was purchased for $15,000 by Robert M. Clemens, agent for Abed Itan, from the consignment of Blue Ribbon Farm, agent for Fell Hill Farm.

WTBA reported 142 horses as sold for $471,000. The $3,317 average was 8.6% less than last year’s sale, while the median dropped significantly from $2,200 to $1,000.

Complete results are expected to be posted on the WTBA website at www.washingtonthoroughbred.com by Tuesday.
