Barretts October opens with sale-record purchase
Three horses sold as part of the complete dispersal of Stan Fulton’s West Coast racing stock topped the opening session of the Barretts Equine Ltd. October mixed sale at the Hinds Pavilion in Pomona, California, on Monday.
Tenga Cat, a four-year-old winning Storm Cat colt who is a half brother to Grade 1 winner Startac, was purchased by Grant S. Truman for $250,000, a record price for the Barretts mixed sale. Tenga Cat, a winner of a six-furlong allowance race on July 7 at Hollywood Park in his most recent start, is out of stakes winner Tenga, by Mr. Prospector.
The Fulton dispersal helped propel the session to new heights, as Barretts reported 201 horses sold for total receipts of $2,434,500, an increase of 154.7% from last year. Average price increased 139.8% to $12,112, and median improved 29.6% to $3,500. Buyback rate increased slightly from 20.2% last year to 20.9% in 2007.
Also from the Fulton dispersal, Craig Lewis, agent for Al and Sandee Kirkwood, paid $205,000 for maiden winner Midnight Excess, a half brother to Grade 3 winner I’m a Jewel. Midnight Excess, a three-year-old In Excess (Ire) colt, is out of the winning *Golden Eagle II mare Soaring Jewel.
Orientate Slew, a three-year-old Orientate colt, was purchased for $180,000 by NW Management. Orientate Slew is a half brother to Grade 1 winner Mayo On the Side and is out of the winning Slew o’ Gold mare Slewveau. Orientate Slew has two seconds and one third from three starts this season after not racing as a juvenile.
Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent for Fulton, consigned Tenga Cat, Midnight Excess, and Orientate Slew. All three surpassed the previous sale record for a horse of racing age of $125,000.
Today’s final session begins at 11 a.m. PDT.
