Fasig-Tipton October sale closes on up note
Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2001
Although overall figures remained down considerably compared with 2000, the market improved markedly on Tuesday, the second and final day of the 2001 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. In the second session, 168 horses were sold for $2,371,700. While that number was about $1.2-million less than the total for the second day of the sale last year when 244 horses were sold, the $14,117 average for the day was almost $3,000 higher than the average for the first day of this year's sale.
Overall, 323 horses sold for a total of $4,144,800 this year, down 38.8% compared with last year's total of $6,768,300 for 502 horses sold, while average declined 4.8% to $12,832. Median rose slightly from $6,200 last year to $6,500 in 2001.
"There was actually quite a bit of bounce to the sale today," said Terence Collier, Fasig-Tipton director of marketing. "Considering the circumstances, we're quite happy."
Agent Baden P. "Buzz" Chace paid the highest price of the second session, $200,000 for a daughter of Unbridled out of stakes winner Miss Nance, by Blushing John, consigned by Three Chimneys Sales as agent.
"This has been a good little sale," Chace said. "I've always been real lucky here."
Two other horses also brought six-figure prices—an Awesome Again filly bought by Dr. Naveed Chowhan for $112,000 and a Boston Harbor colt purchased by Heatherway Inc. for $105,000 —John P. Sparkman
