Tattersalls October sales concludes with declines in gross and average

Posted: Saturday, October 20, 2001

The Tattersalls October yearling sale wrapped up on Saturday with total receipts and average down from last year's record-breaking auction.A total of 749 yearlings were sold at the five-day sale for gross receipts of 26,055,700 guineas ($39,319,635) compared to a year ago when 776 yearlings sold for 32,256,200 guineas ($48,676,5678). Average price dipped to 34, 787 guineas ($52,496) from 41,567 guineas ($62,727), and median also fell by to 21,000 guineas ($31,690) from 26,000 guineas ($39,235) last year.

"With seven consecutive record October yearling sales behind us, we knew that despite another top class catalog we would have a hard task trying to match the extraordinary figures of last year's sale," said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.

A colt by Selkirk topped the final session with a final bid of 210, 000 guineas ($316,90) from Anthony Stroud Bloodstock. The colt is out of the Royal Academy mare Nottash, who is a half sister to champion sprinter Lake Coniston (Ire).

A record price for a Tattersalls October sale yearling was set on Thursday during the morning session when Charlie Gordon-Watson acting as agent for Coolmore Stud's John Magnier won a bidding duel with John Ferguson for a daughter of Danehill on a final bid of 475,000 guineas ($720,194).

A total of 52 yearlings were sold during the final session for total receipts of 1,271,000 guineas ($1,362,548) and an average of 24,446 guineas ($36,891). Last year's final session saw 62 yearlings sold at an average price of 24,040 guineas ($36,278) for gross receipts of 1,490,500 ($2,249,254).
