Kentucky sales officials unsure of effect of economy on October sales

Representatives of both Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton Kentucky are unsure of what to expect at their upcoming sales in October. Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales, said the going may be rough in the wake of terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11.

"Tough, yes," Russell told the Lexington-Herald Leader. "It can't be up or down because it's a new sale".

He also noted the sale may prove popular to buyers who were unable to make it to the September sale because of transportation problems resulting from the attacks.

The inaugural two-day Keeneland sale begins Monday with 644 yearlings cataloged for both sessions.

Fasig-Tipton will conduct its annual October sale the following week.

"We'll be anxious on the 22nd and 23rd and hope that it's going to be strong," said Boyd Browning, Fasig-Tipton's executive vice president. "I don't think it's going to be disastrous and go through the floor."

A total of 505 horses are cataloged for Fasig-Tipton's sale.
