Posted: Friday, December 14, 2001
Three of the nine Danehill offspring landed the three highest bids during the Piaget Hong Kong International sale on Friday, an auction conducted by the Keeneland Association.
With 15 more offerings than the 2000 sale, gross receipts posted a 14.8% increase to $7,224,359 on the 38 sold. The sale's average was $190,115, down 30.5% from last year's average of $273,690.
Jacky Chan secured the sale's top-priced offering, going to $576,923 ($4.5-million Hong Kong) for colt by Danehill out of the Darshaan mare Caraniya (Ire). One of the seven foals produced by Caraniya, the Australian-bred colt is a half brother to Group 3 winner Cajarian and stakes-placed winner Dancer and Son.
The other top-priced Danehill juveniles included a gelding out of the Irish River (Fr) mare Spell On You purchased for $487,187; and a gelding out of the Darshaan mare Darlya purchased for $320,518.
The sales graduate who earns the most by the time of next year's sale will earn a bonus equal to $125,000 or 10% of total earnings, depending on the higher amount. This year's bonus of approximately $128,000 went to Li Wing Hon, owner of Danehill's three-year-old son Green Century, a two-time allowance winner in four starts this year in Hong Kong.
