Comic Strip weanling tops Keeneland session

A filly from the first crop of multiple Grade 3 winner Comic Strip topped the ninth session of the 11-day Keeneland November breeding stock sale on Tuesday after a final bid of $120,000.Consigned by Robert Courtney's Crestfield Farm, agent, the filly was purchased by Tom VanMeter. Produced by the stakes-placed Seattle Slew mare Delta Slew, she is a half brother to stakes winner Meadow Pipit and stakes-placed winner Coup Fizzles.

Keeneland reported sales on 271 horses during the session for a total of $3,618,200, a drop of 29.9% from last year's comparable session when 246 horses were sold for a total of $5,160,400. The session's average of $13,351 was down 36.4% from last year's figure of $20,977. The median declined 47.1% from $17,000 in 2000 to $9,000 this year.

Overall, 2,050 horses have been sold for a total of $175,942,200, an average of $85,825 and median of $30,000.

The penultimate session of the sale begins at 10:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday.
