Hughes may be out of action until April after ban in India

Champion jockey Richard Hughes may not be permitted to race until April 29 at the earliest due to a suspension handed down by stewards in Mumbai, India.

Racing Post reported that Hughes was suspended for not following instructions on a ride last week, an offense that does not exist in England. However, a ban in India would be reciprocated in England.

Hughes said he will appeal the suspension.

“I’m disappointed with the decision and I have to appeal it,” Hughes told Racing Post.

If Hughes does not win his appeal in India, his next step would be to ask the British Horseracing Authority not to reciprocate the penalty. If the BHA does follow through with the reciprocation, Hughes would not be permitted to ride until at least April 29, which is the end of the Mumbai racing season.

“We await being informed by the relevant racing authority regarding any suspensions, and subsequently how they would expect the suspension to be reciprocated by our jurisdiction,” BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said. Once this information has been received, we will subsequently uphold it in the manner requested.”

Earlier in the month, Hughes was found guilty of elbowing another jockey during a race and persuaded an appeal panel that he was guilty of nothing more than improper riding.
