Jockey Javier Castellano earned his 3,000th career victory on Friday aboard Virtuously in the sixth race at Gulfstream Park.

“It feels great. It was time. I stayed patient and rode the same way I always ride,” Castellano said. “I’ve been very blessed to have all the support from all the owners and all the trainers and my agent, Matt Muzikar. People think it’s only myself, but it’s not. I have a lot of help.”

Castellano, 34, began riding in his native Venezuela in 1996, and moved to the U.S. shortly afterward in June 1997. He earned his first North American victory aboard Phone Man on July 31, 1997 at Calder Race Course.

His most lucrative victory came aboard Horse of the Year Ghostzapper in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) at Lone Star Park. Castellano was also the regular rider on 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner and champion three-year-old Bernardini.

Castellano has also had success internationally, winning the 2005 Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) at Nad Al Sheba.

Among the rider’s other achievements, Castellano won five consecutive races at Saratoga Race Course in 2010. He is believed to be the first ever rider to accomplish the feat. He has won riding titles at Aqueduct, Calder Race Course, and Hialeah Park.
