Amazombie, winner of the 2011 Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter, will make his first start since taking the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on Saturday in the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park.
Instead of easing into his six-year-old season, Amazombie will face Grade 1 winner The Factor, Malibu Stakes (G1) runner-up Rothko, and multiple graded stakes-placed winner Sway Away in a field of six.
Trained by Bill Spawr, who also co-owns the gelding, Amazombie captured the Eclipse Award after posting five wins in nine starts, including victories in the Ancient Title (G1) and Potrero Grande (G2) Stakes as well as the Breeders’ Cup.
The horse Amazmobie defeated in the Ancient Title, The Factor, will break to the Northern Afleet gelding’s immediate right and is listed as the 7-to-5 morning-line favorite.
The four-year-old War Front colt trained by Bob Baffert most recently rolled to a 3½-length victory in the Malibu on December 26 after posting an eighth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1). The Factor won four-of seven starts as a three-year-old, including a victory in the Pat O’Brien Stakes (G1) at Del Mar.
Other entrants include Malibu runner-up Rothko, multiple stakes winner Mensa Heat, multiple graded stakes-placed winner Sway Away, and recent allowance winner Canonize.
