Capuano earns 3,000th training win

Trainer Dale Capuano earned his 3,000th career training victory on Thursday when Father Mudd won the day’s ninth race at Laurel Park.

Capuano, 49, is a regular on the Maryland circuit, and has been the state’s leading trainer eight times. He has amassed 31 training titles at Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park, and is tied with King Leatherbury with a record nine Maryland Million wins.

Capuano saddled his first career winner in February 1981 when Who’s Lucky won at Bowie Race Course. His most lucrative victory came in the 2007 Nearctic Stakes (Can-G2) at Woodbine, which was won by Heros Reward. The son of Partner’s Hero won seven stakes races with Capuano.

Other notable horses trained by Capuano include Grade 2 winner Prized Stamp, and Grade 3 winners Greatsilverfleet and Wind Splitter, who he saddled to an 11th-place finish in the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1).

“I was pretty proud when I won our first race so when you get to 3,000 it’s pretty remarkable,” Capuano said. “It’s just been a pretty good run. You know we’ve had a lot of help, great clients, great barn people who work for us, a team effort. I’m just the leader.”
